The short answer: anchor every mini meal with soya or pulses
On a small appetite, think of protein as the anchor of every plate or bowl. Use tofu, tempeh, soya mince or edamame for the biggest lift per bite, then add lentils and beans. Keep textures soft, sauces moist and portions modest.
A simple target that works for many is roughly 20–30g protein in a main meal and 10–15g in a snack or light plate. Split it across the day so nothing feels heavy. For a personal number, see our protein calculator article on the site.
If you struggle with rough textures, pick gentler options: marinated tofu baked until crisp on the outside but soft inside, saucy tempeh, silky dahl, blended bean soups and well-cooked pulses. Sip fluids with meals and eat slowly.
Build plates like this: protein (tofu/tempeh/soya) + easy carb (rice, soft wraps, potatoes, pasta) + veg you tolerate.
Use sauces to help food go down: soy-ginger glaze, tahini-lemon, tomato ragù, coconut dahl.
Keep tins and freezer stocked for 10-minute bowls.
If digestion is touchy, increase beans and lentils gradually and rinse tinned pulses well. If symptoms persist, speak to your prescriber, GP or pharmacist.
High-protein vegan foods (UK portions)
These are typical protein counts from UK labels. Use them to mix and match small, satisfying meals.
High-protein wraps: Mission Protein or similar; good with tofu or bean fillings.
Red lentil pasta: cooks fast and is gentler than very fibrous salads on tricky days.

2–3 tweaks that make vegan protein sit better on Mounjaro
Small appetite often means small margins. These tweaks help your protein go further and feel better.
Moisture is your friend: sauces, stews, and soups are easier than dry foods.
Toast spices in oil, then add water/stock to make a thin sauce; it helps each bite slide down.
Chew more than feels normal and pause between bites. It keeps portions comfy.
Go steady with very fibrous skins and raw veg on off-days; swap to cooked, peeled or blended veg.
If you use protein powder, favour soya or pea blends and keep scoops modest. Mix into porridge or yoghurt, not just water.
If nausea pops up on injection day, see our “Foods for nausea on Mounjaro” and “What to eat on injection day” guides for gentle options. Persistent symptoms? Speak to your prescriber, GP or pharmacist.

Questions people ask
How can I reach my protein target as a vegan with a tiny appetite?
Front-load protein in every small plate: tofu, tempeh, soya mince or edamame first, then add lentils/beans. Aim for 20–30g in main meals and 10–15g in snacks, using moist, soft dishes. Soya yoghurt, red lentil pasta, baked beans on toast and quick tofu bowls all work well. For a personal target, use the calculator on our site.
Tofu or tempeh: which is higher in protein?
Per 100g, tempeh is usually higher (around 19g) than firm tofu (about 14g). Tofu is softer and often easier on tricky days. Tempeh is nuttier and holds sauces well. Keep both in rotation and choose by texture tolerance that day.
Do I need vegan protein powder on Mounjaro?
Not necessarily. Many people meet their protein with tofu, tempeh, soya mince, edamame, lentil pasta, beans and soya yoghurt. A small scoop of soya or pea blend can help on low-appetite days—stir it into porridge or yoghurt for a gentler texture.
Beans and lentils bloat me. What can I do?
Start small and build up. Rinse tinned pulses well, cook dried lentils until very soft, and choose smoother dishes (soups, dahls, blended sauces). Spread portions through the day and sip fluids. If ongoing bloating or tummy pain persists, speak to your prescriber, GP or pharmacist.
